Dear Senthil, thank you so much for writing. I am pleased that I have readers as far away as India (I'm in Canada, so we're in different parts of the world even though we're both Commonwealth countries and our cultures are therefore similar).

I liked Michael Jackson's music a great deal. In fact, in a funny story, I remember arguing with an ex-boyfriend about an issue, and I told him that I wasn't alone in my opinions. So to illustrate that, I sent him an email with a link to the video "You are not alone," even though in this case it was I who was not alone.

About the dark side of Michael Jackson's life, I feel he was in some ways a troubled human being. He ended being basically addicted to painkillers. Now about the charge that he molested young boys, as I've mentioned before, I strongly believe he was a victim of the hysteria that surrounded alleged child sex abuse - though I must admit I lost sympathy for him after he was stupid enough to keep having these parties after he'd been accused once.

I think like King Ludwig of Bavaria, Michael Jackson will always remain a mystery - and maybe that makes his story all the more fascinating.

I agree that most American Blacks have non-African ancestry. My brother-in-law, for example, has White (Irish and Dutch, he believes) and American Indian ancestry. And similarly, Michael Jackson had at least one White ancestor and an American Indian one as well (both men). Interestingly, though in the past most White-Black relationships consisted of White men and Black women (granted, many of these relationships were less than voluntary from the women's perspective), now there are more Black male-White female relationships than the opposite, both in Canada and the United States.

With regard to Jackson, it's hard to know what was going on in his head. One commentator said that while other African-American celebrities made their Blackness a part of their identity, Jackson tried to deny his. Now I think that is going too far. My interpretation is that Michael Jackson didn't want to confine himself to one racial community: he wanted his music to appeal to all racial and ethnic groups, so he didn't necessarily want to market himself as an exclusively "Black" star. And there he succeeded: his music garnered fans from around the world. So I don't think that he necessarily denied his African ancestry; he just aimed for universalism.

Does Celine Dion's English singing make her any less 'White?'

The link below is a photo of a teenage Michael; untouched by plastic surgery and only just beginning to show the tell tale signs of vitiligo. Notice his hair, it is what most African descended folks look like when they emerge from water; it is the hair of a bi/tri-racial person, or what euro-racist like to call Hamitic African. None of the Jacksons, and for that matter no African-Americans are 100% African. In fact most African-American men carry the Y chromosome of their European rapist slave masters. Michael had no problems with his ethnicity, its the idiots in the media who just would not let him be. By the way if my livelihood depended on my appearance I'd want it to be as flawless as possible.

It's really hard to know what was going on in Michael Jackson's head in terms of colour. One thing for sure, though, I think Jackson was determined not to limit himself to one ethnic community in terms of his fan base. That's I believe the main message of the song "Black or White." And here I have to commend him for reaching out beyond his own ethnic group. And in some ways that's not so different from, for example, Celine Dion's decision to sing in English, because she knew she'd get more people listening to her music than if she had continued singing in French.

Evan Chandler was a despicable piece of work. I mean if Evan Chandler were really so outraged about what Michael Jackson supposedly did to his son, why didn't he demand that Jackson be put in jail? The asking for (and accepting) money seems more than a little suspicious.

Also, I don't know if the blame for what happened to Michael Jackson and other people accused of child molestation under suspicious circumstances can be entirely laid at the feet of Oprah Winfrey. I think it was part of the hysteria about child sexual abuse which overtook the United States (and other countries) during the 1980s. That's not to say that real child sexual abuse is a disgusting crime when it does occur, but the hysteria hurt a lot of people, not only the accused themselves but some of the children who were basically forced to lie by their parents (like Jordan Chandler).

Why is it that no one ever comments on Michael's skin going darker during the 70's and early 80's, when it is said his problem with Vitiligo became more severe? As a lifelong fan it was obvious to me that he was wearing heavy dark make-up yet no one comments on that. His publicity shots for the Thriller album looks much darker than shots from his Forever Michael and earlier albums. Why is it that we are so obssessed with "whiteness?" I imagine that after receiving 2nd degree burns to his face and head it made much more sense to lighten the dark patches rather than darken the lighter/whiter patches. If I made my living with my appearance I imagine I'd have done the same. It is clear that he agonized about it until finally he felt liberated as evidenced by the statement "I'm not gonna spend my life being a color." As for the molestation accusations we can thank Oprah for that one. She was the one who was obssessed with child sexual molestation, and made many erroneous statements on her talk show. In particular she claimed that children of abuse are most likely to abuse other children; without qualifying the type of abuse, thus Michael's verbal and physical abuse at the hands of his father made him a likely candidate for sexual abuse of a minor. It made the accusations of sexual abuse by an opportunist like Evan Chandler much more believable. I get some satisfaction knowing that all Michael's millions couldn't buy him happiness and only alienated him from his son; I imagine a scene from the movie Ghost when I think of him in that New Jersey hotel room after he blew his brains out last November.
